In 2008, the Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse and supporting events made possible a $400,000 donation to the Medical College of Wisconsin. With this contribution, the Showhouse funded three 2-year grants of $133,000 for breast cancer and prostate cancer research. Recipients of the awards are:
• Guan Chen, MD, PhD, Professor, Pharmacology and Toxicology, for a project on the Collaboration of Estrogen Receptors and Vitamin D receptors in Regulating Breast Cancer Invasion. Dr. Chen’s research is investigating how estrogen receptor a (ER) and vitamin D receptor (VDR) work together in breast cancer growth and metastasis. Dr. Chen and his research team are ultimately looking for a therapeutic target for stopping breast cancer growth and metastasis.
• Andrey Sorokin, PhD, Professor, Medicine, for his project: Eicosanoids and Resistance of Prostate Cancer Cells to Chemotherapeutic Agents. Chemotherapy often has little or no effect on reoccurring prostate cancers. Dr. Sorokin is investigating what makes the prostate cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy. The findings of this study could result in the development of new, more effective chemotherapeutic therapies for patients with a reoccurrence of prostate cancer.
• Carol Williams, PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology, for her project: Expression and Function of the Unique Guanine Nucleotide Exchange Factor SmgGDS in Breast Cancer. Dr. Williams’ research revolves around a protein called SmgGDS and its role in breast cancer metastasis. This work is aimed at understanding how SmgGDS functions, with the final goal of designing drugs that stop metastasis and the development of breast cancer cells.
Promising breast cancer and prostate cancer research by past recipients of Showhouse grants has led to over $12 million in extramural research grants awarded to the Medical College of Wisconsin by the National Institutes of Health and other foundations.
Showhouse donations have also been set aside for a special research development fund. The Showhouse Lab Fund totals more than $533,000 and will be used to recruit a new, high-level faculty member dedicated to breast cancer research.
To date, the Showhouse has donated $3.5 million to fund breast cancer and prostate cancer research at the Medical College.

Grant proposals submitted to the WBCS are peer-reviewed and ranked in order of priority by a committee of the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center members. The proposals are then submitted to the WBCS for its consideration. The WBCS Scientific Advisory Committee, comprising MCW cancer researchers, community oncologists, and survivors reviews the proposals and makes its recommendations to the WBCS Board of Directors, which votes for approval and funding..
