OUR MISSION
AND FUNDING

The Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse was founded in 1998 as an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) charitable organization by Nance Kinney, a breast cancer survivor. Its mission is to support breast and prostate cancer research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

The 2007 Showhouse and supporting events realized $425,000 and our Showhouse’s contributions to the Medical College of Wisconsin in 10 years total over $3 million. Promising breast and prostate cancer research by past recipients of WBCS grants has led to over $11 million in additional extramural research grants awarded to the Medical College of Wisconsin by the National Institutes of Health and other foundations.

Your participation in our Showhouse For a Cure ensures continuing support of the Medical College’s Cancer Center research efforts.

Constructed of Milwaukee's own Cream City brick, with tile hip roofs and arched windows, this year's Mediterranean Revival style house was built in 1923 by Waldemar R. Helmholz and his wife, Irene.  The Helmholz' cherished the natural surroundings of the property and created several terraces, a vegetable garden, fountains, tennis court, pool and boathouse, and a stream with waterfalls leading to the natural beach.  After several interior and exterior remodels of the house throughout the years, Sean and Coleen Tutton, the current owners, have rediscovered and embraced several of its original hidden treasures.

The 7,400 square foot, six bedroom, six and one-half bathroom house features its original solid wooden door with hand blown bottle glass window panels.  The limestone staircase, with its wrought iron railing and marble landing, is characteristic of the Mediterranean style of the 1920's.  The quarry tile floor in the foyer has been carefully selected to blend with the original quarry tile floor in the adjoining vestibule.  A massive, three-sided stone fireplace in the living room/dining room anchors this space, leading to a terrace highlighted by a Cream City brick, natural working fireplace.  A custom-made window across the east wall of the area affords a magnificent panoramic view of Lake Michigan.  Sunlight and moonlight stream into the home on all four levels, including the lower level which was originally the servants' quarters.

The natural landscape of the backyard is home to abundant wildlife, including two owls, fox, deer, coyotes, a visiting peregrine falcon, and a spectacular eagle sighting.

With minimal architectural barriers, this year's talented team of interior and exterior designers and landscape professionals has been free to exercise its creativity and artistry in this warm, family-friendly retreat.  After visiting the house, enjoy the spectacular beachfront property and visit our popular boutique for unique treasures.
